HEADSHOT RATES
$400: Includes a Full (three-hour) Session, with unlimited looks and images within that time, digitally photographed, outdoors and/or indoors, and all 'negatives' are yours to keep within a few days of our shoot. All images are  carefully reviewed, and lightly retouched before you get them to ensure high quality.

NEW FOR 2008:
$50: Micro (1/2 hour) Session, perfect for those with no money AND no time. This quickie photo shoot lasts half an hour, and the images are burned to a disk on the spot, and handed over to you 'as is' (no retouching). Hair/make-up services are not available for the Micro Session, unless provided by you.

Now you can buy extra shooting time ala carte, with the purchase of either the one- or three-hour session:

  • Additional 1/2 hour: $50
  • Additional hour: $75

Also included for every shoot is an optional pre-shoot consultation. We may talk by phone or email, but I encourage my clients to come in person. This will give you an opportunity to get comfortable with me and my shooting space, as well as give us a chance to discuss your needs, goals, and preferences for the session.

STYLE & APPROACH
My background is in cinematography and production still photography (take a look at some of my production stills on the site). Working on film sets, I have developed a great instinct for capturing moments that both reflect the story and characters. As a headshot photographer, that instinct helps capture something really unique and interesting about you.

To that end, I try to create a very relaxed, friendly, and casual atmosphere. I like to arrange a consultation in advance of our shoot so I can get to know you, and you me.

I prefer shooting portraits outdoors. Natural light (correctly handled) is flattering, abundant, and unobtrusive.

STUDIO LOCATION

I am conveniently based in Brooklyn Heights. My area offers a great range of background looks: stately brownstones and tree-lined streets; waterfront views, parks, playgrounds, and the Heights' Promenade; and for a rougher, edgy feeling-- the grafitti, cobbled streets, and crumbling brick warehouses in DUMBO.

I am also happy to shoot at a location of your choice within Manhattan or nearby in Brooklyn for an additional fee.

If you prefer, or if the weather demands, we may also shoot indoors with my additional studio lights.

WHAT TO WEAR

Wardrobe changes are welcome! I don't have a limit on 'looks' -- you can change outfits according to what feels right as we shoot. Bring a range of styles to chose from.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

  • Solid colors and interesting textures are most effective.
  • Avoid patterns, distracting necklines, and pure white or black clothes -- they do not photograph well.
  • Try to also avoid outfits that are too formal (business suits), too sexy (see-through, low- or hi-cut), or too casual (sweats) -- unless they are for character-type headshots, or for specialty use such as online dating and corporate portraits.
  • What tends to work best are shirts a shade darker than your skin if you have a paler complexion, or a shade lighter than your skin if you have a darker complexion -- to make you 'pop out' more. Also, pick colors that will compliment your eyes.
  • What also works well is layering your tops: Cardigans, vests, hoodies, tweed blazers, courderoy/denim/leather jackets, sweaters, and oxford shirts all look great layered together or seperately over a fitted tee-shirt, tank/camis, or thermal top.

Above all (even if it contradicts the other stuff) wear whatever makes you feel great!

A good trick: If you can splurge, treat yourself to an outfit you have always wanted but couldn't afford. If we treat it carefully and keep the tags on -- hiding them from the camera, of course -- you can always return it after the shoot!

Jewelry (especially earrings and necklaces) and watches may be distracting. Try to keep it simple, or avoid accessories all together.

HAIR & MAKE-UP
It is important to use a professional make-up artist that will bring out your best features, hide any temporary flaws, and help you feel beautiful and confident for your shots. I work with a talented hair and make-up artists (rates vary per session length).

You may also bring your own assistant, do your own hair and make-up, or come already prepped.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

I photograph with pro-quality digital cameras and lenses. All images are viewable and printable in color and B&W.

You may have your digital 'negatives' on a photo CD, generally within a few days of our shoot (yours to keep at no additional charge).

Digital Retouching, and Comp Card/Zed Card design is available for an additional fee.

Studio rental available for an additional fee (around $200/4hours) -- perfect for modeling portfolios!

WHY ARE MY RATES SO LOW?

Many people believe that old consumer adage: You get what you pay for.

However, inexpensive does not always equal inferior. Let me explain the reasons why my rates are much lower than many other NYC headshot photographers:

  1. My studio is my apartment. I do not have exorbitant rental payments to pass onto my clients. For those that prefer to shoot in a larger studio space, I simply add the rental fee to my regular rates.
  2. I shoot digitally. With Photoshop as my darkroom, workflow is time- and cost-effective. I do not have overheard film or processing fees, and the rest of my overhead is low.
  3. My packages are basic. They do not include extras such as 8X10 enlargements, extensively retouched images, or online portfolios.
  4. You haven't heard of me. I do not have the brand-name recognition or reputation as many $800, or $1000 photographers -- and brand names usually carry much higher price tags.
